Nita's european bakery

what makes Nita's European bakery a hidden gem...

Many things make Nita’s European Bakery a hidden gem. Let’s take a look.

Wonderful bakery and pastry shop, in the best tradition of Romania

As one of the only specialty Romanian bakeries in the borough, Nita’s just happens to also be one of Sunnyside’s longest standing businesses. A small shop nestled in the quieter part of Greenpoint Ave, their local reputation has certainly been among the very best and why? Their pastries and sweets are fantastic.

Like any good bakery, it’s really hard to nail down what they truly do well. I’ve enjoyed their cookies over the years and their mini cakes are the perfect dessert for a post-Greenpoint food crawl. One of their most popular selections is a Romanian treat called the savarina. It’s like a rum cake meats cream puff and stupid delicious. I would recommend getting more than one since they run out practically daily.

Folks often forget that they’re also master caterers and their custom cakes are fabulous. They make dobos torte, or a Hungarian sponge cake that is filled with buttercream and drizzled with caramel. It is definitely underrated in the cake world and certainly a specialty I’m glad they make. I know of folks who have utilized their custom cakes for special occasions from weddings to birthdays and I was really impressed with their black forest cake. it was good and so rich that I think I could only eat it once in awhile.

Last I checked, this place was still cash only. Things could be different now, but they’re better with dollars than they are plastic. The ladies behind the counter might not look very approachable, but rest assured they’ll be helpful in pointing out the best stuff of the day (which really might just be everything).
